About the GEM > Ecole des Mines d'Albi-Carmaux

The School

Located on a 22 hectare campus, the Albi-Carmaux School is the most recent of the seven Schools.  Its modern buildings and facilities include lecture halls with audiovisual and multimedia equipment and free-access computer room (24/24) with Internet access, large classrooms, four research centers, and a documentation center located at the heart of the campus.

The on-campus restaurant and cafeteria with balanced meals at attractive prices provide the chance for students, faculty, the administrative personnel, etc. to eat and meet informally in a convivial setting.

Student housing is located partly on campus, and partly downtown. As is the case for all the GEM schools, all student housing is furnished and equipped with telephone and television lines and Internet access.

Students have a large variety of cultural and sports infrastructures available right on campus, ranging from the « Maison des élèves » (650 square meters containing a bar, a music studio, a dance floor for parties, etc.), to sports fields, a rock climbing wall, and a weight training room.

The town and surrounding areas

Located one hour from Toulouse and two hours from Paris by plane, Albi is a fascinating town whose warm red color is reflected in the green waters of the Tarn river.  The small, narrow roads of the town converge toward the Sainte-Cecile Cathedrale, which dominates the surrounding region.

Despite the undeniable historical interest of the town (Albi was at the center of  important medieval conflicts, and this heritage is omnipresent), Albi today is a young (10% student population) and dynamic town, economically and culturally.

The Toulouse-Lautrec Museum is the fourth most visited provincial museum in France, while the « le Vieil Alby » (the old town) and the Palais de la Berbie are world-known tourist destinations.  The Albi open-air markets offer an ideal opportunity to get to know the warmth and friendliness of the people of the South of France.

Often listed among the most pleasant towns of France, Albi is ideally located in the center of the Midi-Pyrenees region, thus allowing students easy access to the mountains for skiing, hang-gliding, hiking, mountain climbing, canoeing, rafting, etc.  In addition, the beaches of the Mediterranean are an hour's drive away, while the countryside of the South of France can be explored year-round.
