About the GEM > Ecole des Mines d'Alès

The School

Four sites

The Alès School is composed of four different sites, covering a total of 48 000 m² within the town itself. The School also has two other sites at Nimes and at Pau. The Alès sites include the administrative buildings, classrooms, research centers,
the « Maison des Elèves » (Student Residence),
the « Musée de Minéralogie », etc.
Both the small size of the town and the good quality of the urban transportation system allow easy access to all the different areas.
The School has its own restaurant open morning, noon, and evening from Monday to Saturday.
The « Cyberspace » provides a convivial and relaxing meeting place, as well as free access to computers and Internet.

Housing

Students can choose to live at the «Maison des Elèves», which is located within walking distance of the classrooms.
The «Maison des Elèves» has individual rooms, as well as studio and duplex apartments for two people, equipped with bathrooms and kitchenettes. Each housing unit has Internet connection.
Students have on-site access to a laundry room, a weight-training room, sports facilities for beach volleyball, tennis, etc, a climbing wall, and can take advantage of other opportunities that contibute to a pleasant community life.
School spirit is fostered through the different associations and clubs available to students (photography, humanitarian, potholing, astronomy) as well sports teams (rugby, soccer, basketball, etc.)

The town and surrounding area

The location

Alès, capital of the mountainous Cevennes area, is located in the Southern French department of the Gard, and is well connected to major French cities.
It benefits from a sunny climate, and is currently situated at the head of a list of most dynamic French towns.
Cultural events and facilities such as the national Cratère theatre, a multimedia library, a museum of modern art, a film festival, and the « feria », all contribute to the rich cultural diversity of Alès.
Alès is located in the immediate vicinity of some of the most visited French towns: Nimes, the « French Rome » ; Avignon, where the « Palais des Papes » dominates the town ; Uzès reknowned for its medieval architecture, and the «Pont du Gard» (Roman aqueduct), which is the third most visited French site after the Eiffel Tower and the Palace of Versailles.

The rich diversity of Alès and its surrounding area

Located one hour from the Mediterranean coast, Alès is among the most beautiful towns in the South of France, and has the added advantage of being located in the heart of one of the most beautiful regions of France with the Cévennes mountain range nearby.
