Student's guide > Health : coverage and access to care

Foreign students must subscribe to a health insurance system which covers medical expenses.

There are two systems depending on your age:

Students under 28 years old
The system is called "Régime étudiant de la Sécurité Sociale".
Registration with the Sécurité Sociale is done at the same time as registration in the school. As an indication, the cost of subscription to the Sécurité Sociale was around €177 for the 2003-2004 academic year.

In addition, a complementary insurance scheme known as a "Mutuelle", enables students to obtain complete reimbursement of medical expenses. Subscription to a "Mutuelle" is not mandatory but highly recommended.

Students over 28 years old
The system is called the CMU.

People who do not benefit from the basic Sécurité Sociale coverage and who cannot subscribe to the Sécurité Sociale student system (those older than 28, non-accepted learning institutions...) may, under certain conditions, benefit from the CMU. It allows any person residing in France in an uninterrupted way for more than 3 months to benefit from the Sécurité Sociale for healthcare expenses. This coverage is free of charge, under certain conditions.
Consult your GEM school for details and registration procedure.

Access to healthcare: who should treat you ?

In France, two kinds of doctors can treat you in case of illness: general practitioners and specialists. The cost of consultation is €20 for a general practitioner. Payment is made directly to the doctor and then you apply for reimbursement.
