Literature and culture: a brilliant heritage, a promising future

Culture in France today draws its strength from a rich cultural heritage spanning - 20 centuries.

Discover its artistic treasures by visiting the Louvres Palace in Paris and palaces, castles and galleries and historical monuments in every corner of France.

Its literary heritage across the centuries from the Middle Ages, the Renaissance, the Enlightenment to the modern day includes a wealth and variety of writers: playwrights (Racine, Corneille and Molière and more recently Samuel Becket and Ionesco), novelists (Balzac, Zola, Stendhal, Flaubert, Victor Hugo, Sartre, Camus,...), poets (Villon, Baudelaire, Rimbaud, Verlaine...), philosophers (La Rochefoucauld, La Bruyère, La Fontaine, Pascal, Rousseau...)to name but a few.
